I Dig Canals is a wonderful collection of memories, stories, poems and pictures celebrating all the ways women helped to save Black Country canals

…rich with detail, conveys the grittiness and romance of life on the canals and gives the women involved a great way of capturing and sharing their memories. A balanced, enjoyable, easy to read book which gives a voice to amazing women. (Traci Dix-Williams, Chief Executive, Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust)

…a wonderful evocation and celebration of the vital part that women volunteers played in saving and restoring the canals of the Black Country and the wider network. (Keith Hodgkins, chairman, Tipton Civic Society)

Idle Women of the Wartime Waterways shares some of the stories of the wartime trainees through Kate’s play Isobel’s War and Heather’s poetry and songs.

In 1942, the Women’s Training Scheme started. Young women, mostly from middle class backgrounds, learned to handle pairs of 72ft narrow boats with 50 tons of cargo. This book tells their stories through monologue, poetry and song lyrics, and reveals how they came to be known as ‘idle’ (when they clearly weren’t).
